Mick Gerrits

Mick focuses on complex international disputes. He has over ten years of experience handling international disputes across a broad range of sectors, including consumer and retail, energy and natural resources, and technology and media. Mick has acted for both sovereign states and investors in investor-state disputes, including setting aside and enforcement proceedings and related attachment proceedings. He has also acted for central banks, large corporates and high-net-worth individuals in commercial litigation and arbitration under various institutional rules and governing laws.

Before joining Ysquare, Mick worked in the international litigation and arbitration practice of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek.

Mick lectures on international arbitration at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

  • Representing a publicly listed Dutch retail company in parallel Dutch court inquiry proceedings and expedited ICC arbitration in the context of a multi-billion-euro takeover
  • Representing two European software companies in an NAI arbitration against another European software company arising out of an M&A transaction
  • Representing a Luxembourg private equity fund in an NAI arbitration against a Polish private equity fund relating to a shareholder dispute about the emergency funding of their joint venture
  • Representing a sovereign African state in parallel commercial ICC arbitration and investment arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules, including arbitrator challenge proceedings, in a dispute with an Indian company
  • Advising a Canadian mining company in the enforcement of its USD 1.4 billion ICSID award against the Republic of Venezuela in connection with the expropriation of a gold mine
  • Representing the former majority shareholders of the largest Russian oil company in their defense of a USD 55 billion award in setting aside proceedings before the courts of The Hague against the Russian Federation
  • Advising a Central Asian country in its defense against the enforcement of a USD 500 million SCC investment arbitration award on account of fraud in respect of a purported investment in the energy sector
  • Representing Ukrainian companies in setting aside proceedings before the courts of The Hague regarding multi-billion-dollar disputes with the Russian Federation over the nationalisation of various investments in the energy and banking sectors located in Crimea
  • Advising a state-owned utility company in the enforcement of an award and a judgment against an oil major and its subsidiary, respectively, including various attachment proceedings
  • Representing the national bank of a Central Asian country in disputes before the Dutch, Belgian and Swedish courts arising from an illegal attachment of its assets worth over USD 22 billion, including levying a cross-border attachment and subsequent summary proceedings
